Read Job 29:2
Many Christians can look back at a time when their relationship with the Lord was sweet, fresh, and full of joy—but now, the present feels dry, heavy, or distant. They remember days when prayer flowed naturally, worship was heartfelt, and their hearts burned with zeal for God. But now, they find themselves saying, “Oh, how I wish things were like they used to be.”
The reasons for this spiritual decline can vary:
Neglect of prayer – A prayerless life is the first step toward a cold heart.
Idolatry – When our hearts give more attention to worldly things than to God, our love for Him fades.
Pride and self-reliance – When we depend on our own strength, we drift from humble dependence on Christ.
God is a jealous God; He will not share His rightful place in your heart. When we wander, He sometimes allows us to feel the loss of His nearness—not to punish us, but to draw us back.
If you are not as close to Jesus as you once were, don’t just sit and wish for the past. Go to Him in prayer. Tell Him your condition. Ask for His grace to help you walk closely with Him again. Humble yourself before Him, and He will restore you. With Jesus, there’s always hope for revival—no matter how far you’ve drifted.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that my heart has wandered from You. Forgive me for letting prayer fade, for letting worldly things take Your place, and for relying on myself instead of You. Draw me close again. Restore the joy I once had in Your presence. Help me to love You with my whole heart, and to walk in daily fellowship with You. Amen.
