Near to the Heart of God

In the Old Testament, God’s presence was marked by distance. At Sinai, the people were told not to approach the mountain. In the tabernacle and temple, only priests could enter the holy places, and the high priest just once a year into the Most Holy Place. The message was clear—sin separates humanity from a holy God.

But the gospel changes everything. Through Jesus Christ, the barrier of sin has been broken. No longer does God say “Stay back,” but instead, “Come near.” We who were once far off have been brought close by the blood of Christ. In Him, there is no wall of fire keeping us away. Instead, Jesus Himself bore our defilement so that we might be welcomed into God’s presence.

This nearness is more than just a truth to know—it’s a reality to experience. To be “a people near unto Him” means living daily in fellowship with God, drawing strength from His presence, and resting in His love. And one day, this closeness will be complete when God dwells with His people forever in the new creation.

What a privilege it is to be called near! Let us not live as though we are still far away.

Prayer
Father, thank You for bringing me near through Jesus. I don’t deserve this closeness, yet You invite me into Your presence with love and grace. Help me to walk each day with the awareness that I am near to Your heart. And I long for the day when You will dwell with us forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
