Read Song of Solomon 5:2
The Christian life is often full of strange contrasts, and this verse is one of them: “I’m asleep, but my heart is awake.”
It describes a believer who loves God but has grown spiritually drowsy. Outwardly, she’s asleep—no longer alert in prayer, worship, or service. Yet deep inside, her heart still stirs for God. There’s still a spark of life within her soul.
Like this woman, we too can fall into seasons of spiritual sleep. Sin, comfort, and distractions can dull our hunger for God. We neglect prayer, lose passion in worship, and drift into spiritual laziness. This is a dangerous place to be—especially when the world around us is perishing and eternity draws near.
It’s time to wake up. The world doesn’t need sleepy Christians—it needs shining lights. God often sends “wake-up calls” to stir His people: difficulties, losses, or trials that remind us we can’t stay comfortable forever.
But there’s good news—our heart can still awaken. Even when we’ve grown cold, the Spirit of God keeps the flame alive. Deep inside, our heart still longs for Jesus. When He calls, “Open to Me,” may we rise quickly and welcome Him in.
Personal Challenge
Am I spiritually awake, or have I become too comfortable and complacent?
Is my love for God still warm, or only faintly glowing beneath layers of busyness and distraction?
What is the Holy Spirit using right now to stir me back to passion and prayer?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, awaken my heart again. Forgive me for the times I’ve fallen into spiritual sleep—too distracted, too comfortable, too tired to seek You. Stir my heart with fresh passion for Your presence. Let me hear Your gentle voice calling, “Open to Me,” and help me to respond quickly and joyfully. Keep my heart alive with love and zeal until the day You return. Amen.
